RuneScape Reignited: the appeal of a fresh start and the risk of a split
My optimistic, pessimistic and realistic take on the original Reignited proposal and what would change my mind.
The proposal I was responding to
This is my response to the original RuneFest 2026 proposal. Jagex began reassessing it on October 6 and published possible revisions on October 9, including using existing membership and switching between Veteran and Reignited versions of a character. Both updates are linked below.
The original plan was a permanent character type with a fresh economy, new hiscores and no paid progression. Your existing character would keep its progress as a veteran character. Both types could share worlds and clans, but trading, Grand Exchanges and boss instances would remain separate. You could not switch an existing character between the two types.
I like the idea of a fair fresh start. I am much less comfortable with permanently dividing two groups of ordinary main accounts.
Why a fresh economy could bring people in
Removing Treasure Hunter does not undo the years when paid shortcuts were available. Someone interested in hiscores, early achievements or progressing with a new group might still want an economy where none of those old stockpiles carried over.
Reignited could appeal to someone who wants to trade and play alongside others but does not want an Ironman account or the established economy. Starting together gives people a reason to sell supplies, work toward upgrades and find others at a similar stage.
The Remastered Journey and optional Adventure Guide could improve that first experience too. Better early quests, interfaces and guidance are useful changes to the game regardless of which character type someone chooses.
Reignited would need to attract new players who keep playing.
What veterans could gain
If RuneScape grows, more investment in the wider game could help people who never touch Reignited. Players might still join the veteran economy to play with existing friends or use a market where equipment and supplies are already available.
That depends on the veteran community remaining attractive to newcomers as well. Growth in a separate economy does not automatically give existing mains more people to trade or boss with.
The pessimistic outcome
A busy launch could be a mixture of genuinely new players, veterans trying another account and people taking up the initial free membership. The difficult question is how many are still playing after that excitement passes.
If Reignited does not bring in enough lasting new players, RuneScape could end up with a disrupted veteran community and a fresh economy that also struggles to keep people. Some veterans might feel pushed to restart when their friends move. Others might decide they do not want to repeat years of progress and stop playing.
The restrictions would also give a new player a consequential choice before they understood much about RuneScape. They would have to pick an economy, work out where their friends were and wonder whether the same community would still suit them years later.
Shared clan chat would help people stay in touch, but it would not restore a boss evening they could no longer play together on those characters. Playing both would also mean finding time for both accounts and, under the original plan, paying another subscription.
Where I landed
I think Jagex has made good decisions this year. Better guidance, a better early journey and better ways to find people to play with are all worth doing. I can understand why Jagex wants a fresh start after the game's history of paid progression.
I still worry the player base is too small for a permanent separation like this. Supporting two main-account economies that cannot trade or boss together seems like a difficult path. A later merger might not undo the disruption or bring back people who had already left.
I would rather see a limited fresh-start approach explored than assume two permanent communities can both stay healthy. The October 6 response shows that the shape of Reignited is now being reconsidered.
What would change my mind
I would be happy to be wrong if Reignited brought in a substantial new audience, the veteran economy stayed healthy and growing, and the game kept improving for everyone.
I love the idea of a fair fresh start. I want Jagex to find a way to offer it without making existing players feel that the accounts and communities they spent years building are being left behind.
